When Women Invest, Markets Shift: Citrine Demystifies Angel Investing

On February 25, Citrine Angels proudly launched the Female Funder Panel Series, powered by Citrine Impact, at Refraction in Tysons. The evening marked more than just the start of a three-part program — it signaled a step forward in expanding women’s participation as early-stage investors across the Mid-Atlantic region.

Recently featured on WTOP, this flagship series was designed to answer a critical question: What happens when more women step confidently into the role of  funder? The answer, as our panel made clear, is transformative — for individual wealth, for founders, and for the innovation economy itself.

Demystifying Angel Investing

Moderated by Citrine Board Member, keynote speaker, and executive coach Lisa Conners, the conversation centered on “Demystifying Angel Investing — How Women Build Wealth and Impact.” The panel featured powerhouse voices from across the investing ecosystem:

Together, they broke down the fundamentals of angel investing in clear, accessible terms. Angel investing is not a mysterious or exclusive club and it doesn't have to be scary. It is the act of investing personal capital into early-stage companies in exchange for equity. While certainly risky, a supportive and diverse community helps investors make better decisions in a positive environment. It is both financial strategy and ecosystem-building.

But beyond the mechanics, the discussion explored something deeper: why women’s capital matters.

Why Women’s Capital Changes the Equation

When women invest, markets shift.

Panelists shared both data and personal experience illustrating that women investors are more likely to fund women and underrepresented founders — groups that have historically received only a fraction of venture capital dollars. When women control capital, they don’t just build wealth; they create opportunity.

This conversation feels especially urgent given the unprecedented inflection point ahead: an estimated $30 trillion is expected to move into women’s hands over the next decade. When women actively participate in the funding process, they redefine what success looks like — directing capital toward ideas that reflect their values, lived experiences, and communities. In turn, this creates a powerful feedback loop: women investors fund women founders, who inspire and enable even more women to invest.

As echoed throughout the evening, early-stage investing is not only about returns — it is about voice, visibility, and long-term impact.

Aligning Capital with Values

A central thread of the evening was alignment. How do you invest in a way that reflects your values?

Panelists emphasized that angel investing allows individuals to back founders, industries, and missions they believe in. Whether it’s climate innovation, fintech, health equity, or consumer products, investors have the opportunity to support companies shaping the future.

This alignment between values and capital is particularly resonant for women who want their wealth-building strategies to reflect broader community impact. Angel investing becomes not just an asset class, but a statement.

Studies have shown that women are more capital efficient with their investment, and women invest at much higher rates in women founders, who deliver 2x better returns to investors. Increasing access to venture capital for women entrepreneurs isn’t charity—it’s smart economics. It also fuels the growth of diverse leadership, inclusive products, and solutions that better serve half the population.

Practical Steps to Get Started

Importantly, the evening was not theoretical. It was actionable.

  • The panel walked attendees through concrete suggested next steps:
  • Understand accreditation requirements
  • Join a community of investors, such as Citrine Angels

Start with education to build your confidence - but also, don’t be afraid to jump in and learn through exposure

Citrine Angels was founded on the belief that education and community are the gateways to confident investing. Through curated deal flow, structured pitch meetings, and collaborative due diligence, members gain the tools to participate actively  in early-stage opportunities.

And through Citrine Impact, our 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we expand access to investing education, outreach, and public programming so more women can enter this ecosystem with knowledge and confidence.

Building Wealth — Together

What made the evening so energizing was not only the expertise on stage, but the community in the room. Accredited investors sat beside angel-curious attendees. Seasoned funders connected with first-time participants. Questions were candid. Conversations were generous.

This is the future of funding — collaborative, values-driven, and inclusive.

The Female Funder Panel Series is just getting started. The next session in our three-part series will take place in May, focusing on the due diligence process.
